SINGAPORE<\/strong> \u2013 The School of the Arts, Singapore (SOTA) announced the winners of the SOTA Primary 6 Art Competition 2021 on 5 April 2021. The top 10 winners and top 40 finalists namelist are listed in Additional Notes. Supported by Mapletree Investments Pte Ltd (\u201cMapletree\u201d) for the third year running, the competition received more than 1000 submissions this year, up from over 800 received in 2020. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The annual competition is open to all Primary 6 pupils of that year for young artists to express their creativity and hone their skills. This year, participants submitted artworks based on one of the three themes, Looking Out of My Window, Space Zoo and Tropical Fruit. With the current COVID-19 situation, the themes this year focused on challenging them to draw inspiration for their artworks from their homes and their imaginations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lim Sin Jie from Junyuan Primary School drew an artwork about heritage playgrounds in his neighbourhood, Tampines, with tropical fruit themes such as a watermelon, mangosteen and pineapple. He researched that these mosaic playgrounds were mostly built in the 1970s \u2013 1980s with only a few remaining today. He shared, \u201cMany generations of children, including myself, grew up near these playgrounds, making them an important part of Singapore.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe competition gives a glimpse into how young artists try to understand and reflect on their surroundings. Through the themes provided, the Top 50 artworks creatively explored topics such as heritage, global warming and the COVID-19 pandemic, to name a few. It is heartening to see how these young artists have been able to express themselves and find connections between art and the current world. We are excited to showcase the works by the top 50 finalists in an online exhibition on our website.\u201d said Ms Amy Khoo, Vice-principal – Arts, SOTA. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMapletree is proud to support the SOTA Primary 6 Art Competition for the third consecutive year as we see the growing participation in the competition year after year. Supporting the arts and the community has always been important for us and we hope to encourage more interests for the arts, as well as attract young creative talents. With the exhibition held online, more people would be able to view and appreciate the winning artworks,\u201d said Mr Edmund Cheng, Mapletree\u2019s Chairman. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
