Second Mapletree Annual Sustainability Lecture at NTU Singapore explores the impact of urbanisation on the environment

SINGAPORE – Mapletree Investments (“Mapletree” or “the Group”) is pleased to announce that the second Mapletree Annual Sustainability Lecture has taken place on 21 November 2025. The attendees comprised Mapletree employees, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (“NTU Singapore”) students, staff and alumni, as well as members from the public including representatives from the academia, government and private sectors.

The keynote lecture was delivered by Professor Karen C Seto, one of the world’s leading experts on urbanisation, and the panel discussion featured Dr Emma Ramsay, Lee Kuan Yew Postdoctoral Fellow and Associate Professor Janice Lee, both from NTU Singapore’s Asian School of the Environment (“ASE”) as well as Ms Sharon Baptist, Vice President, Development Capabilities and Initiatives, at Mapletree’s Group Development Management. The lecture was graced by Guest-of-Honour, Professor Emma Hill, who chairs NTU’s ASE.

Hosted by NTU’s ASE, organised by CIFAL Singapore at NTU and supported by Mapletree, this year’s keynote lecture drew insights from latest research and explored how contemporary urbanisation is driving changes in climate, the loss of agricultural land and the demand for raw materials.

Mr Edmund Cheng, Chairman, Mapletree, said, “As a real estate developer committed to sustainability, Mapletree believes in urban development that creates long-term value through responsible practices. We hope this lecture series inspires individuals and facilitate collaboration in building a better urban future for generations to come. We will continue to champion initiatives that enable individuals to achieve meaningful advancements in sustainability.”

The series closed with an engaging panel discussion titled “Sustainable Urban Futures: Science, Nature, and Investment”. The panel explored how scientific evidence, nature-based approaches and responsible investment can work together to shape urban environments that are resilient and inclusive. The discussion addressed the role of ecological design in enhancing urban liveability, the cultural and social dimensions of sustainability, and how industry and policy can support long-term climate-conscious development. Moderated by Professor Adam Switzer from NTU’s ASE and Director of CIFAL Singapore, the discussion also encouraged cross-disciplinary exchange and invited participants to reflect on how cities can be built to benefit both people and the planet.

The Mapletree Annual Sustainability Lecture is part of the Mapletree Sustainability Programme established in 2023 following a S$675,000 gift from Mapletree to NTU. This funding supports the lecture series and the Mapletree Sustainability Scholarships for NTU undergraduates committed to advancing sustainability causes.

Mapletree is also proud to announce the renewal of scholarships for two NTU students for the Academic Year 2025/2026 – Ms Tay Yu Xun, a third-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Earth Systems Science and Mr Daniel Loke Juin Ren, a third-year student pursuing a Double Degree in Bachelor of Science in Environmental Earth Systems Science and Bachelor of Social Sciences in Public Policy and Global Affairs. This marks their third consecutive year as recipients of the Mapletree Sustainability Scholarship.
